![]() ![]() ![]() Plausible, but not experimentally verified and even prima facie seems suspect. One top comment is a hypothesis about the size and shape of the penis being naturally selected by "sensory bias" from females. ![]() Let me make a few comments about some of the other theories being presented in this thread. TL DR: Unique size and shape of human penis is designed to scoop out another male's semen from the female vagina and replace it with your own. Though I encourage everyone to read the study itself as it is highly accessible. (Found an article from Scientific American talking about the study. So I do suggest you read the linked PDF if you have doubts about the experimental design. My summary doesn't do justice to what is a really interesting, rigorous scientific study. ![]() This is an evolutionary mechanism to prevent you from displacing your own semen. Note that this neatly explains why human males commonly experience intense discomfort when continuing intercourse right after ejaculation. (Especially advantageous in circumstances where the copulation is forced, which was a far more common occurrence even a few hundred years ago than it is now.) As you can imagine, this would be a major advantage in tribal societies where you can replace the semen from male competitors with your own. Gallup shows that this is an adaptive advantage when it comes to "semen displacement." That is to say, our the length and shape of our penises are designed to scoop out semen from the female vagina. I'll give a quick summary: the human penis has a longer shaft and a largerīulbous glans (ie head) than any primate. The most scientifically compelling literature on this subject is from a 2004 study by Gordon Gallup: We make our world significant by the courage of our questions and by the depth of our answers.
